PRF Treatment
Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) treatment is used in dentistry to lower the risk of infection, accelerate healing, and decrease post-operative discomfort. PRF treatment boosts your own body’s healing by concentrating the healing components of your blood. Prior to starting a surgical procedure, such as an extraction, Dr. Chitgopekar will draw a small amount of your blood from your arm. That blood will then be spun in a centrifuge in order to separate and concentrate the plasma, platelets, and fibrin. This Platelet Rich Fibrin can then be applied to the surgical site to improve healing, decrease post-operative discomfort, and decrease the risk of infection.
During wound healing, platelets are among the first cells to respond at a wound site. They are critical to the initiation of the healing process. Besides their clotting effects, platelets contain a rich array of growth factors, which can assist in hard- and soft-tissue wound healing.
PRP can be used in several types of oral surgery:
- Bone grafting for dental implants
- Onlay and inlay grafts
- Sinus lift procedures
- Ridge augmentation procedures
- Closure of cleft palate and/or lip
- Palate defects
- Repair of bone defects created by removal of teeth
